Uttar Pradesh has a long tradition of education, although historically it was mainly confined to the elite and religious schools. Sanskrit based education made the main part of education from Vedic to Gupta period. As cultures traveled through this area, they brought together the Pali, Persian and Arabic scholarships with the community and brought their body of knowledge to them. These were the origins of Hindu-Buddhist-Muslim education till the rise of British colonialism. The existing school-to-university system of education has given credit for its establishment and development in the state (in the rest of the country) for foreign Christian missionaries and British colonial administration. State schools are either managed by the government or by a private trust. In most schools, Hindi is used as the medium of instruction in Hindi except for the Council for CBSE or ICSE boards. After completing secondary school, under 10 + 2 + 3 plan, students usually enroll in junior college for 2 years, also known as former university, or Uttar Pradesh Board of High In schools affiliated with high school, intermediate education or a central board Students choose one of the three streams, i.e. liberal arts, commerce, or science. Upon completion of the required coursework, students can enroll in general or professional degree programs.
There are more than 45 universities in Uttar Pradesh, 5 Central Universities, 28 State Universities, 8 eminent universities, two institutes in Varanasi and Kanpur, 1 IIM in Lucknow, 1 NIT in Allahabad, 2 IIIT, 1 National Law University in Lucknow And many polytechnics, engineering colleges and industrial training institutes. Indian Institute of Technology (BHU), Indian Institute of Management (Lucknow), Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology (Allahabad), Indian Institute of Technology (Kanpur), Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Postgraduate Medical Sciences, , Indian Institute of Information Technology (Allahabad), Indian Institute of Information Technology (Lucknow), Engineering and Rudyogiki Institute, Kanpur, King George Medical University, Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia National Law University and Harcourt Butler Technical University is known worldwide for their quality education and research in their respective fields. The presence of such institutions provides students with adequate opportunities for higher education.
Other universities in the state include Banaras Hindu University, Allahabad University, Lucknow University, Uttar Pradesh University of Medical Sciences, Chandrashekhar Azad Agriculture and Technology University, Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Dr. BR Ambedkar University, Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University, Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Awadh University , Madan Mohan Malviya Technology University, Gautam Buddha University, Deen Dayal Upadhyaya, Gorakhpur University, Indian Veterinary Research Institute Bareilly, IMT Ghaziabad, Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University, MJP Rohilkhand University, Bundelkhand University, Narendra Dev Agriculture and Technology University, Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar and Shwvidyaly, Veer Bahadur Singh Purvanchal University, Barendu Academy of Dramatic Arts, Siddhartha University, Allahabad State University and Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti Urdu, Arabic ~ Persian University.
To provide education in various technical, applied science and other disciplines, a state level institute, Integral University was established by the Uttar Pradesh government. The Central Higher Tibetan Study Institute was established by the National Culture Ministry as an autonomous organization. Jagadguru Ram Bhadracharya University is the only university which is specially established for disabled people in the world. A large number of Indian scholars are educated in different universities of Uttar Pradesh. Notable scholars who were born, studied or studied in the geographic region of the state include Harivansh Rai Bachchan, Motilal Nehru, Harish Chandra, and Indira Gandhi.
