The state has the largest railway network in the country, but in spite of its plain topography and the largest population, only the sixth highest railway density is in the state. As of 2011, there was 8,546 km (5,310 miles) in the state.  Allahabad is the headquarters of the North Central Railway and Gorakhpur is the headquarters of the North Eastern Railway. Besides the regional headquarters of Allahabad and Gorakhpur, Lucknow and Moradabad, the Northern Railway Division serves as the departmental headquarters. Lucknow Golden Shatabdi Express connects Lucknow with second fastest train, Indian capital New Delhi. It was India's first train to get the new German LHB coach.  Railway stations of Lucknow NR, Kanpur Central, Varanasi Junction, Agra Cantt, Gorakhpur, and Mathura Junction were included in the Indian Railway list of 50 World Class Railway Stations.

In the state, there is a large, multi-functional transportation system with the country's largest road network.  The state is well connected to its nine neighboring states and almost all other parts of India through National Highways (NH). It has 42 national highways, total length is 4,942 km (9.6% of total NH length in India). Establishment of Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation was established in 1972 in the state to provide financial, dependable and comfortable transportation with services connecting and the only one to run in profit throughout the country State Transport Corporation is located. All the cities are connected to the state highways, and all district headquarters are connected to four-lane roads which take traffic between the state's main centers. One of them is the Agra Lucknow Expressway, which is a 302 km (188 miles) controlled access highway constructed by the Uttar Pradesh Expressway Industrial Development Authority (UPIDA), which reduces vehicle traffic in already crowded roads. This expressway is the largest Greenfield Expressway in the country, which reduces the travel time between Lucknow and Agra from 6 hours to 3.30 hours. [1 9 7] In rural areas of other district roads and villages, access to villages is provided to meet the needs of agricultural production as well as to meet their social needs in nearby markets. Major district roads provide a secondary work of connecting between main roads and rural roads. [1 9 8] Uttar Pradesh has the highest road density in India, (1,027 km per 1000 km2) and the largest urban road network (50,721 km) in the country.
There are two international airports in Lucknow (Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport) and Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport in Varanasi in the state. and four domestic airports located in Agra, Allahabad, Gorakhpur, and Kanpur. After the Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi Lucknow Airport is the second busiest airport in North India. The state has also proposed to construct the Taj International Airport in Kurukupa near Tundla Deerangaon in Firozabad district.  Two more international airports have been proposed in Kushinagar and Guer, Greater Noida. Lucknow Metro is being constructed as an alternative means of transportation in Lucknow city and Kanpur subway. There is a rapid increase in the number of immigrants in capital cities and it has demanded a change of public means of transport
